Summary
The Wadden Sea is one of the world’s most important wet-
lands, holding a unique range of biological riches. One of
the clearest pieces of evidence of this is the rich bird life,
known to everybody with a mere modicum of interest in, or
association with, the Wadden Sea.
The various habitats in the Wadden Sea area each have
a specific and major importance for a number of typical
species of coastal birds, and the Wadden Sea is both an
important breeding area and a staging area for numerous
species of fouraging, moulting and resting migratory birds.
Monitoring of the bird life over the last 25 years has con-
firmed that almost 500,000 pairs of waterbirds breed in
this unique coastal area, and that the total Danish-German-
Dutch Wadden Sea area is used by 10-12 million migrating
waterbirds of over 50 species every year.
The Wadden Sea is important for over 30 species of
breeding coastal birds, and with its total population, the area
is a very significant breeding area at European level. Seen in
this light, the Danish section of the Wadden Sea is important
or very important for 11 species of waders and terns, and 13
species of breeding coastal birds are included on the EU’s
Bird Protection Directive’s Appendix I. The factors influen-
cing the status of the breeding coastal birds are many, and
