build up a number of companies to support DUC’s opera-

tions in the Danish North Sea. But Maersk Drilling, which

was established in 1972, quickly gained customers other

than DUC for its rapidly growing fleet of rigs. At the end

of 2011, Maersk Drilling employed around 3,000 people

and operated a total of 27 rigs worldwide. The fleet, which

comprised 12 jack-ups, five semi-submersible rigs and ten

drilling barges, made Maersk Drilling the world’s seventh

biggest operator in this area at this time.

In 1980, Maersk Drilling ordered construction of the

jack-up rig MÆRSK ENDEAVOUR by Rotterdam Dock-

yard Company for delivery in 1982. Given the hectic situa-

tion on the rig market at this time, the ink on the order was

not even dry before Maersk Drilling entered into a leasing

contract with DUC on the rig, which in 1982 was towed di-

rectly from the shipyard to the Tyra field, where the contract

was for the drilling of production wells for the field, where

production was due to commence in autumn 1984. During

its 25 years with Maersk Drilling, the MÆRSK ENDEA-

VOUR performed numerous tasks for DUC and entered the

Danish offshore history books in 1991 by being the first rig

to install a STAR platform. The rig further consolidated its

historic status via its participation in the discovery of the

Halfdan field in 1999. And it was also via a temporary in-

stallation on the MÆRSK ENDEAVOUR that DUC, barely

a year after the discovery of the Halfdan field, in February

2000 was able to start temporary production from the field

producing over three million barrels of oil even before the

          permanent production platform was installed.

Together with two other Maersk Drilling rigs, the rig

was sold in 2007 to Northern Offshore, which was es-

tablished in 2000 and, at the end of 2011, was operating

          three jack-up rigs, a semi-submersible rig, a drillship and a

floating production unit with assignments in Asia and Eu-

rope. The earlier MÆRSK ENDEAVOUR, now named the

ENERGY ENDEAVOUR, was the only one of Northern

Offshore’s rigs active in the Danish North Sea. As so often

happened during its time with Maersk Drilling, it was also

DUC’s operator Mærsk Olie og Gas which had jobs for the

          well-known rig this time.
