danske statsselskab.
Summary
2012 marked the fiftieth anniversary of shipowner A.P.
Møller’s concession for the exploration and extraction of oil
and gas from the Danish section of the North Sea. The Danish
shipping line had no experience of the oil industry, so it
formed an alliance with the Gulf and Shell oil companies in
the joint company Dansk Undergrunds Consortium (DUC),
which was established to fulfil the obligations under the
concession. A.P. Møller also established Dansk Boreselskab
at the same time, partly to act as A.P. Møller’s representative
in DUC and partly as the link between DUC and the Danish
authorities.
The concession, DUC and Dansk Boreselskab (later
Mærsk Olie og Gas) became pivotal elements in the de-
velopment of a new Danish industry which emerged in the
wake of the first oil finds and commenced production in the
North Sea in the 1960s and 1970s. Only about two decades
later, Denmark was not only self-sufficient in oil and gas but
was also able to export hydrocarbons which had a positive
effect on the Danish balance of payment and trade. The oil
industry also brought the Danish national economy consid-
erable added value in the form of taxes and charges, turn-
over and employment. The estimated value of oil and gas
production was just over DKK 51 billion in the early 2010s,
with investments in oil field constructions, operations and
exploration just over DKK 10 billion, total exports around
DKK 48 billion with taxes to the Danish state of almost
DKK 24 billion, and an employment around 15,000 direct
and indirect jobs in Denmark.
The centre of the Danish offshore industry, which de-
veloped rapidly in the 1980s, was in west Denmark. Esbjerg
had been singled out as base city for the Danish offshore
activities in the North Sea as early as the mid-1960s, and the
city became the hub where most offshore-related companies
in Denmark were situated. In the early 2010s, Esbjerg was
home to an estimated 200 such companies with a minimum
of 9,000 employees and an annual turnover of 7-8 billion
Danish kroner. To this should be added a considerable level
of employment in and revenue from offshore wind energy,
into which more than half of the Esbjerg firms had gradually
