Summary
Fishing from Esbjerg Harbour during the First World War.
This article provides a chronological analysis of fishing in
Esbjerg harbour during the First WorldWar. The article starts
with the establishment of the harbour and the city, and then
analyses the conditions for fishing.
The outbreak of the world war was testing for Denmark,
and while people in Copenhagen concentrated on the Bal-
tic Sea, those in Esbjerg concentrated on the North Sea. For
good and bad, the war had an impact on the city, which in
fact was very marked. While a number of industries suffered
during the war, Esbjerg’s fishery experienced a boom period.
There was a record catch of haddock, and with an increased
demand for food, the fishermen earned substantial sums. At
the same time, the fishermen had to keep their options open
with respect to the parties to the war; the fishermen thus ex-
perienced both internment in Cuxhaven and mined cutters.
The article thus discusses both the conditions and the de-
velopment of the fishery at Esbjerg harbour during the First
World War, and analyses the significance of the progress of
the war for the city’s biggest industry.
