Summary
At sea with the MARIE MÆRSK
Morten Hahn-Pedersen was offered a trip on one of the
world’s biggest container ships, the M/S MARIE MÆRSK,
on the occasion of his retirement as director of the Fisher-
ies and Maritime Museum. He signed on with the MARIE
MÆRSK in Rotterdam at the end of October and sailed with
the ship for the next couple of weeks, with stays at harbours
in Bremerhaven, Felixstowe and Tangier, to Algeciras,
where he signed off before the MARIE MÆRSK continued
on her route via the Suez Canal to harbours in Malaysia,
China and Korea.
In this article, the author gives a brief summary of his
main impressions from the trip concerning the dimensions
and fitting out of the MARIE MÆRSK – one of the enor-
mous Triple-E ships which in 2015 were state of the art in
modern ship technology, the ship’s 24-man international
crew and the art of forging an efficient workforce out of
such a heterogeneous flock, the trip itself at sea and in the
harbour, life and work on board, the experience and the sub-
stantial documentary material in the form of papers from the
ship, interviews, records, notes and more than 1,200 photos
on the conditions of modern shipping which were also one
of the results of the trip with the MARIE MÆRSK.
