Summary

In 2014, two humpback whales (

Megaptera novaeangliae

),

a mother and her calf, were regularly observed in the inner

Danish waters and the Baltic throughout summer and au-

tumn. A third whale was apparently observed near Helsinki,

Finland, only one day before one or two humpback whales

were observed near the Danish island of Møn. Covering a dis-

tance of more than 950 km in just one day is highly unlikely

given known cruising speeds of humpback whales (between

4.8 and 14 km/h). Hence, if the observation in Helsinki is cor-

rect, there must have been three humpback whales present.

Neither of the two humpback whales was registered in the

photo identification catalogue containing more than 8,000 in-

dividuals from the North Atlantic. The two whales may have

come from the Cape Verde islands, where the population has

been increasing in recent years. North Atlantic humpback

whale stocks have generally experienced a substantial recov-

ery, and the species has also become more abundant in adja-

cent North Sea waters, and it might thus also be expected to

occur more commonly in Danish waters in the future.

The observations of the humpback whales were reported

by local sailors and people at the beaches to the Fisheries

and Maritime Museum and the website

www.hvaler.dk.

The

involvement of the public in collecting information on the

occurrence and behaviour of marine mammals, termed

citi-

zen science

, is a suitable and low-cost way of data harvest-

ing which at the same time serves to increase public aware-

ness of marine mammals.
