Summary
Two thousand and six marks the thirtieth anniversary of
the opening of the sealarium at the Fisheries and Maritime
0XVHXP :KHQ LW ZDV RSHQHG WKH VHDODULXP ZDV XOWUD-
modern, and for the public, the chance to observe the seals
WKURXJK ZLQGRZV EHORZ ZDWHU OHYHO ZDV SDUWLFXODUO\ QRYHO
This was followed later by breeding and the reintroduction
of young seals into the wild - a work which was initiated
because of a drastic fall in the seal population in the Wadden
6HD %UHHGLQJ ZDV QRW GLVFRQWLQXHG XQWLO ZKHQ IRO-
lowing their protection at the end of the 1970s, the popula-
tion was again increasing and there was thus no longer any

sealarium made it possible to study seal biology and be-
haviour while the population in the Wadden Sea was being

Feeding was further optimised when training of the seals

The methods are in common use and they are effective,

Some of these problems will be able to be addressed if the
