Summary How to convey historical quantative material? As a part of my PhD study I spent two days a week from February to June 2017 at the Fisheries and Maritime Museum at Esbjerg with the task of sharing some of the results from my recent work on Scandinavian sailors who sailed on Dutch vessels out of Amsterdam in the 17th and 18th centuries. During a research stay in Amsterdam in 2015 I have compiled a databank with per- sonal data from some 6,700 Scandinavian sailors mentioned in the city’s crew lists, the waterschout archives. The problem was then how to share all the exciting details from these findings with a wider audience? I have suggested to use a single per- son as an example for the thousands of sailors, who migrated from the Southwest Coast of Jutland and from the westcoast of the Dutchies to the Netherlands. Captain Jens Sørensen Strellev, who was born near Holstebro in 1733, came to Amsterdam as a young boy and advanced through the ranks to become a cap- tain on a large dutch merchantman sailing to the Levant, bring- ing oriental cloth, silks and carpets back to Amsterdam. Because of the outbreak of the 4th Anglo-Dutch War in December 1780, he had to sell his ship, the brig “St. De Metrio” and return to the metropole, which he left in 1786 and returned home to Den- mark. Being now a very wealthy man, Jens Sørensen brought a huge amount of luggage with him and settled in Strellev, near Ølgod, where he bought a considerable estate and build a large farmhouse. Because of his many belongings and a large family, many items have survived to this day and could be used as ba- sics in a future museums exhibition about the maritime labour migration from the Waddensea area to Amsterdam. Another way to tell the story of the Scandinavian sailors in the Netherlands turned out to be via the internet, where the website HistoriskAtlas.dk have become a suitable platform to come out to a wider audience. The website is manly driven by cultural in- stitutions and have uploaded thousands of stories about places, people, castles, battles and what have you. This wealth of know- ledge can be reached by iPhone without having to find the local museum, archive or library. I have thus used HistoriskAtlas.dk to publish four articles about sailors from Højer, Grådyb, Ballum og Tønder.
