The museum has mounted 246 exhibitions over the past 50 years, including six basic exhibitions of a more or less perma- nent nature. The basic exhibitions provide an insight into the museum’s work in the areas of Danish fishing, West Jutland shipping, Danish offshore industries, the Danish marine envir- onment, Danish marine mammals and the natural and cultural heritage of the Wadden Sea. Some of the museum’s exhibitions have included live animals. When the museum opened in 1968, it already had a salt wa- ter aquarium. The aquarium was intended to complement the museum’s permanent exhibition on “100 years of the Danish fishing industry” by showing the fish that the fishermen caught. The list of special exhibitions is long. In the period 1968-2017, there were 22 exhibitions with a focus on natural history and 83 with a focus on cultural history. In addition, there have been cross-disciplinary exhibitions involving elements of both cul- tural and natural history, among them “Fish-Fisherman ” (1980), “Across the Wadden Sea ” (2008) and “Dead Whales ” (2011). Art has also featured in the museum’s exhibitions, with the museum’s areas of responsibility being interpreted through paintings, sculptures and photographs: in all there have been 27 art exhibitions and 20 photographic exhibitions. The history of the Fisheries and Maritime Museum has included collabora- tion with other museums and institutions, partly in the form of exhibitions mounted in partnership with other institutions (18 exhibitions). In addition, the museum has hosted travelling ex- hibitions (27 exhibitions). Earlier, the museum also worked to bring knowledge of its tasks to other parts of the country by helping to set up exhibitions elsewhere – 11 exhibitions in the period 1974-1995. Anniversaries of historical events and other occasions and his- torical objects acquired by the museum have also provided an opportunity for special exhibitions (17 special exhibitions). The museum’s own anniversary exhibitions belong to that cate- gory, with the latest being held in 1973. There will also be an anniversary exhibition in 2018 that explores the Fisheries and Maritime Museum’s 50 years of existence.
