179 and technology, the display shows the fishermen themselves in a way which combines fine-art photography and graphic art with more traditional cultural and socio-historical museum com- munication. The story of the Esbjerg fishing industry is retold in a series of 10 mega size drawings and a large graphic map of North Sea fishing grounds, and 76 fishermen are portrayed in photographies that crosses the boundary between realistic photos and artistic visual story-telling. The ambition has been to communicate some of the challenges and terms of life that characterized a group of people, who had a large share of influence on what Esbjerg became through the late 20th century. The marks of a long life on the North Sea are clear in each fisherman’s face. There was seasickness, sleep deprivation, and hard physical labour. But there was also fel- lowship, freedom, and the eternal competition to find the best fishing. Almost all of the portrayed fishermen have also been in- terviewed, and their individual stories are thus preserved in the museum archives and they form the basis for the exhibition’s portrayal of the overall world of the fishermen and their in- dustry, from the poor and simple living into today’s comfortable modern vessels and ways of living. In drawings, photographs, and words, the aim of the exhibition has been to bring the visi- tor closer to the heart of the fishermen’s world.
